Had to bump start it because it wouldn’t fire then limp it there.
If you’re wondering I'm not expecting it to pass...

the joys of living where annual inspections are not necessary.

I once rode a motorbike about 15 miles for an MOT. It wouldn’t get above 40mph, I didn’t expect it to pass, but it came back with three and a half pages of failures! The guy said “I can’t stop you from riding this away, but please, please don’t!”
He let me leave it there for about three weeks before I managed to organise a van to pick it up in, it was THAT bad!

‘u mot w8’ probably being more accurate.

I actually prefer to have the annual inspections in the grand scheme of things. Most things your car can fail on are legitimate safety issues. You and I might be responsible in how we maintain our vehicles, but the same can’t be said about everyone else. The inspections keep the deathtraps off public roads.

Sure is. We decided it'd be easier to get a list from a failed MOT than try and find all the faults ourselves.

Haha hopefully this one isn't that bad...

As Duurtlang said I prefer having them, I feel safer knowing the cars on the road have at least had basic safety stuff checked.

Passing a safety test in an £80 car is often ambitious but rubbish.

£30 isn’t bad for a multi-point vehicle check! At least it covers everything for road worthiness, there’s no engine trouble I’m assuming?

Na it runs well, just an intermittent starting fault. Either electrical or a worn out starter motor.

Makes sense. I never get my car checked before its test. If it passes, well and good. If not they’ll say why not.

Honestly anything a cop can’t see isn’t going to effect your safety.

Can a cop see the condition of the brakes, suspension or steering rack when a car is driving past him?

Most states don’t check any of those things.

What’s the point of an inspection then? They do check those things in many/most European countries, including my own and the one the original post was about (the UK).

California might. Texas scans your codes, checks your lights and blinkers, cracked windshields etc. then does then does a sniffer test every other year. In some counties they don’t even check emissions though. Some states are not as thorough as texas..
As to the point? Not much of one really.
Personally having spent a lot of time in Mexico where WTF vehicles don’t even raise eyebrows, mechanical failures don’t strike me as particularly deadly or concerning, even if they are a bit of a pain. It’s never a popular opinion, and even I have a hard time arguing against it, but safety can be overrated. I think generally ones sense of mortality is enough to allow them the responsibility to limp their car around, and the ones that can’t handle that responsibility will probably kill themselves and possibly others anyway, one way or the other. I certainly wouldn’t want strict inspections, the ones we have seen geared more towards revenue than actual safety.

Precisely. I did pass in the end though, under strange circumstances...
